What this means

You need to change a lawyer's registration type when they move from one category to another (for example, from section 36C to section 36B) while staying in the same law practice.

What you need to know before starting

Before you start, you can refer to: https://www.mlaw.gov.sg/law-practice-entities-and-lawyers/registration-of-individuals/register-an-individual/

Step-by-step process

Step 1: Plan your timing

Choose your start and end dates carefully. The lawyer's current Certificate of Registration (CoR) will stay valid until the end date you choose.

Processing time: 3 to 6 weeks

Step 2: Submit both applications together

You need to submit 2 applications at the same time:

  1. New registration application - for the new registration type

  2. Termination application - to end the current registration

Where to submit: https://eservices.mlaw.gov.sg/LSRA/lsra-home

Step 3: Fill in the application forms

In both forms, enter:

  • Start date for new registration

  • End date for current registration

Important: Please also factor in the various processing time required when proposing the prospective start and end dates in the application forms. Make sure there's no gap between the end date and start date so the lawyer can continue working.

Step 4: Wait for processing

We will process the termination application first, then issue the new CoR.

You will be notified via email

What happens next

After both applications are approved:

  • The lawyer's old CoR ends on the date you specified

  • The new CoR starts on the date you specified

  • The lawyer can continue working without interruption
