TB is caused by a type of bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB usually affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body. There are 2 forms of TB – active TB disease or latent TB infection. A person with active TB disease in the lungs is infectious (i.e. can spread the disease to others), and will exhibit specific TB symptoms. A person with latent TB infection does not develop symptoms (e.g. cough) and does not spread TB to others. The TB bacteria remain inactive in the body. About 5% of persons with latent TB infection may develop active TB disease in the first two years after being infected. For the rest, only 5% may develop active TB disease during the rest of their lifetime. A person with active TB disease should be treated immediately. The decision to treat latent TB infection is made on a case by case basis. What does it mean if I am diagnosed with latent tuberculosis (TB) infection after contact screening? Did I get it from the index case?

The latent TB infection could have been acquired from the index, or from other exposure. Latent TB is not uncommon in Singapore, especially in older persons who may have acquired it in their youth when TB rates in the country were very high. At the national level, it is estimated that about 1 in 10 Singaporeans have latent TB. This is based on local research which estimated latent TB rates between those aged 18 years to 79 years to be from 2% to about 30%. While the latent TB rate among those aged below 18 is not available, the latent TB rate is expected to be low in this age group.

OGP is formally (legally) part of the Government Technology Agency, but we practically function as a separate organisation. We share a common mission with GovTech in that we’re building tech for public good. However, we differ in that OGP has been set up since July 2019 to run separately from the rest of GovTech, so that we can take best practices from companies out there e.g. best tech and organisation practices from top tech companies, and apply them in the government domain to better deliver on tech for public good. OGP’s mission is threefold: (1) Experiment on these best practices (from how we build tech products, the technologies we use, to how we run hiring, compensation, career tracks) in the public sector domain. (2) Demonstrate what works in the public sector domain on projects and things which matter e.g. nationwide systems and products. (3) Propagate these products and best practices to the rest of government, so that over time, we’re doing tech for public good well across the whole government. OGP reports directly to GovTech and Smart Nation senior management, ie, our supervisory panel. We retain our own product ownership, run our own product teams, and have our own HR systems and practices.-----

TB is typically spread through prolonged exposure (days to weeks, rather than minutes to hours) to an individual with active TB disease. When a patient with active TB disease coughs, TB bacteria is released into the air and may be inhaled by those around – prolonged exposure can result in acquiring TB infection. A person cannot get TB from sharing cups, eating utensils, and food. TB is also not spread through shaking someone’s hand, kissing, touching bed linens or toilet seats.
Can only computer science majors apply for SWE roles?

We are open to candidates from different backgrounds, as long as they are able to meet our technical bar for hiring. We do not screen people out on the basis of major or academic achievement alone, but look more at experience and expertise in the field, e.g. we have hired self taught programmers before as well.
