How do parents fulfill their obligation under the CE Act?
Parents have to ensure that their children complete primary education in a national primary school as follows:
- For children in mainstream schools, this means completion of six years of primary education.
- For children in Government-funded Special Education (SPED) schools, this will mean completion of their course requirements in the primary or junior-level section of their school. The usual duration of these programmes is six years. This requirement will apply to the parents of children with moderate-to-severe special educational needs (SEN) born after 1 January 2012.
Parents whose children are not able to attend any national primary school may apply for their child to be exempted. Exemption is subject to approval.
