How do I decide on the educational setting that is suitable for my child with special educational needs?

When determining a suitable educational setting for your child with developmental or Special Educational Needs (SEN), their i) cognitive ability, ii) adaptive skills and iii) general disposition are important considerations. For your child to have a positive learning experience in a mainstream school, they will need an adequate level of cognitive ability to cope with the national curriculum, and adaptive skills to cope with the mainstream learning environment.

If your child has higher support needs and would benefit from more intensive and customised support, such as a specialised curriculum, customised provisions and facilities, or allied professionals with specialised expertise, which are not available in a mainstream school, a special education (SPED) school will be a more suitable option.
