How do I protect my smartphone?

  • Don't follow links you receive in unsolicited email or text messages.
  • Use official mobile phone applications.
  • Never "jailbreak" or "root" your phone. Doing so can give applications unintended access to the phone's operating system and compromise the integrity of your transactions.
  •  Protect your mobile device with a strong password. Smartphones often contain as much sensitive information as a computer and are easier to misplace.
  •  Never respond to urgent emails or text messages claiming to be from a bank or other financial institution. Be wary of calls from people claiming to be officials, especially those of foreign countries. Official agencies would not ask you for your password or make payment over the phone.
  • Install and update antivirus software for your mobile phone.
  •  Install operating system patches and updates for 3rd party applications.
  •  Install software to find and remotely wipe your smartphone if it was misplaced or stolen. Not only can you prevent the data in the phone from being accessed by an unauthorised person, it may help to trace the mobile phone.
