What should we do if there is no vacancy in our preferred school chosen from the range of schools recommended by the doctors or professionals?

There is more than one special education (SPED) school serving each disability type with the exception of Visual Impairment which is supported only at Lighthouse School.

Overall, the SPED schools have sufficient capacity to accommodate children with moderate-to-severe special educational needs (SEN). However, there may be instances where demand for places in a particular school exceeds the maximum number of places that school can offer in that year. Therefore, you need to indicate three choices of SPED schools which serve your child’s profile in the SPED school application form. If the first-choice school has no vacancy, the first-choice school will work with MOE to facilitate the child’s placement in an alternative school that will be able to meet your child’s learning needs and that has an available vacancy. You should broaden your options and consider all the SPED schools which are able to serve your child’s specific educational needs.

Whilst SPED schools seek to process all applications in a timely manner, more time will generally be required to recommend the appropriate school(s) for your child if your choices of SPED schools in the application form do not serve the child’s profile.

You are strongly encouraged to gather information about SPED schools by visiting their websites or Open Houses and interacting with school personnel to ask clarifying questions before deciding.
