My child attained a Merit grade in Higher Mother Tongue Language at the PSLE. Why is he not eligible to offer HMTL in secondary school?

Pupils who offer Mother Tongue Language (MTL) (i.e. Chinese/ Malay/ Tamil) or Higher Mother Tongue Language (HTML) (i.e. Higher Chinese/ Higher Malay/ Higher Tamil) at the PSLE and obtained:

(i) An overall PSLE Score of 8 or better

OR

(ii) An overall PSLE Score of 9 to 14 (inclusive); and attain

  • AL 1 / AL 2 in MTL or
  • Distinction / Merit in HMTL

 

may opt to study HMTL at secondary schools. They may offer English Language and HMTL in the GCE 'O' Level Examination at the end of Secondary Four.
