My child has been abroad for some time and is applying for admission to a local university. Will he/she be required to fulfil the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement?

All Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents are required to fulfil the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement for admission into full-time publicly-funded undergraduate programmes in the local universities. If your child does not fulfil the MTL requirement, he/she may still apply for admission. If accepted conditionally, he/she will be required to fulfil the MTL requirement during the course of study.

If your child wishes to apply for MTL exemption, the MTL exemption application will be submitted to MOE by the university as part of the university application. The outcome will be made known to those who receive an admission offer from the university.
