Students exempted from the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) at the GCE 'O' level examination will be exempted from the MTL at the GCE 'A' level examination. Those who are allowed to learn a Non-Tamil Indian Language (Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi or Urdu), an Asian Language (Arabic)/ Foreign Language (French, German or Japanese) in lieu of an official MTL will continue to offer the subject at the GCE 'A' level examination. There is no GCE ‘A’ Level paper for students offering Burmese or Thai as MTL-in-lieu.

Students who have been approved for exemption from offering MTL are not subject to the MTL requirement for university admission.
